Chapter 18

Waking up the next morning, Dale came to learn that the universe didn't want to grant him a single day of peace. Going outside to stretch his legs a little and pick up his mail, he was unpleasantly surprised to see three envelopes in his mailbox among the advertisements and bills.

They didn't have a return address on them, and they also had no postal stamps, and that could only mean one thing. They were hand-delivered. The final touch was his name written in red ink with a small heart drawn to the side. The theory that a woman was harassing him had more merit with this turn of events.

His stalker had paid him a visit last night, apparently just not when he believed. Maybe when Bella went home? Once again, he hoped she wasn't in any kind of danger for associating with him.

You're reaching. Maybe it's fan-mail. Although none of his readers knew his home address.

Returning inside the house, he put the three letters on the kitchen table, eyeing them suspiciously as though they were about to explode any second. Feeling ridiculous, he picked one up and put it against his ear.

No ticking. That was a small comfort.

Dale didn't know if he should open them or not. What if there was poison or anthrax inside? Dale, don't be ridiculous, he snapped at himself since he was clearly spiraling without a reason. Well, not completely without reason. Having someone stalking you was cause enough for alarm.

He didn't believe his stalker wanted to hurt him, just teach him a lesson. That much was said in all the emails. Perhaps even scare him a little.

With his mind made up, Dale took a deep breath and opened one up. Inside was a single-page letter.

It was made with characters cut out from magazines glued to a page and then photocopied so he couldn't trace the origin of letters or the glue that was used to craft the letter in the first place.

Smart, he thought glumly. His stalker really thought of everything, and that was troubling. The content itself wasn't that surprising.

It read, I see that you are up to your old tricks, whoring around, acting like a no-good scoundrel, making me angry. I really hoped you would see the error of your ways, but no worries. I will make you see. I will make you pay.

You are mine and always will be.

Dale's heart started to beat just a little bit faster reading those lines, and his throat felt completely dry.

God, how I need a drink. He had to take all those threats to heart because they were personal. There was no denying that any longer. This was a product of a deranged mind, yet one he’d clearly dated and wronged in some way.

"Who are you? What do you want from me?" he shouted to the item in his hand. It was obvious what his stalker wanted, to make him suffer.

He felt no need to open the other two. They would just hurt him even more and he couldn't bear it anymore.
